Race for vocations

About the Race

Every October, men and women of all ages lace up together for the Evansville Half Marathon and 5-Miler with a purpose that goes beyond the finish line: running and walking as a prayer for vocations. As part of the Diocese of Evansville's Race for Vocations, participants train with intention, gather for Mass and dinner at St. Benedict Cathedral the Thursday before the race, and then take to the streets of downtown Evansville wearing matching shirts that turn a race day into a visible witness of faith.

What started with 60 runners in 2024 has already grown into a joyful, prayerful community of Catholics that offers up training miles and race-day steps for vocations to the priesthood, religious life, marriage, and single life dedicated to God. Along the way, participants carry the intentions of their fellow runners: for discernment, for holiness, for open hearts listening for God's call.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • ""Why do I want to spend a Saturday morning at a Race for Vocations? Because I want others to know that responding to God’s call brings joy."

    —Sister Pat McGuire

  • "I do the Half Marathon because I have the chance to pray for people while I am walking and have the chance to pray a rosary. I had the opportunity to pray a rosary last year with one of the participants while I was walking."

    —Michael Mosbey

  • “I often run to remain healthy... But my “why” for the Race for Vocations is to make the Lord known in the community. When 1,000 people in Evansville get to see our 80 blue shirts, they might get curious about their own lives. “Am I made for a purpose?” “What am I chasing, and is it worth it?” “Who do I follow, and where is that leading me?” I hope our neighbors might have their eyes opened to being created and called to something much greater.”

    —Father Tyler Tenbarge
